An open-drive, 4-cylinder reciprocating compressor (Bitzer 4T.2Y-S) — its crankshaft extends outside the casing rather than being sealed in with a motor.
It's driven externally by a separate electric motor via belt or coupling, running at 700–1750 rpm to compress refrigerant vapor in a ship's refrigeration or AC system. This design makes it easier to service and rebuild at sea compared to a sealed hermetic compressor.
