An open-drive reciprocating compressor built for a ship's refrigeration or AC system — its crankshaft extends outside the casing, unlike a hermetic compressor where the motor is sealed inside.
It's driven externally by a separate electric motor via a belt and pulley, making it easier to service and rebuild at sea. It compresses refrigerant vapor from the evaporator and sends it on to the condenser, driving the refrigeration cycle.
